At Seedstockers Classics we bring together the cannabis varieties that have become legends: classic genetics like Skunk, Kush, Haze and her sister Amnesia, or Northern Lights, which have spent decades shaping the direction of modern cannabis genetics.

Of the hundreds of strains out there, only a handful stand the test of time. Here you'll find those popular, famous, old-school varieties that remain, generation after generation, a benchmark for any grower.

The history of classic cannabis seeds

How did the cannabis varieties we consider classics today come to be?

Their story doesn't belong to one person or one company. It's the result of decades of selection, preservation and exchange of genetics between breeders across the United States, the Netherlands, Spain and many other parts of the world.

One of the first great chapters began in California in the 1970s. David Watson, better known as Sam the Skunkman, was part of the Sacred Seeds collective and helped develop Skunk #1, a stable hybrid built from Afghan, Mexican and Colombian genetics. In the mid-1980s, Sam brought Skunk #1 and other prized Californian seeds to Amsterdam, where her genetics would go on to shape countless modern varieties.

Skunk #1's legacy still lives on in varieties like Cheese and in our Super Skunk Feminised, a cross of Skunk #1 and Afghan genetics. Her stability, vigour and ease of growing helped turn her into one of the pillars of modern Cannabis Seeds.

The story of Haze also began in California. In Santa Cruz, the so-called Haze Brothers worked with sativas from Mexico, Colombia, Thailand and southern India to develop the Original Haze. Sam the Skunkman helped preserve and transport these genetics to Amsterdam, where they landed in the hands of Nevil Schoenmakers.

Nevil, founder of The Seed Bank of Holland, crossed the Haze lines with genetics like Northern Lights and created foundational varieties such as Nevil's Haze, NL#5 x Haze, Silver Haze and numerous Haze hybrids. His work, carried out partly alongside Scott Blakey, known as Shantibaba, gave rise to Super Silver Haze, one of the most influential and award-winning varieties of the 1990s.

Shantibaba was also behind legendary genetics like White Rhino, Critical Mass and El Niño. He's generally credited with creating White Widow as well, though there's a well-known historical debate here, as part of the industry credits Dutch breeder Ingemar as her creator. The lack of complete documentation from that era makes it hard to settle the matter for good.

Another lesser-known but hugely important figure in this story was Jay Jackson, known to friends as JJ and founder of Advanced Hydroponics of Holland. After his passing in 2025, several people close to him revealed that JJ had helped develop, preserve and carry clones of varieties like Bubble Gum, Northern Lights and Silver Pearl, among others, to the Netherlands.

JJ never sought public recognition for this work and preferred to keep his involvement quiet. That's why his name is still unknown to many growers. Yet according to those who worked alongside him, he played an important role in preserving and evolving several genetics that are now part of cannabis history.

Sam the Skunkman, Nevil Schoenmakers and JJ weren't just working with genetics created in the United States. They also preserved seeds gathered on trips through Afghanistan, India, Thailand, Colombia, Mexico and other regions with a long cannabis tradition. Many of these seeds, clones and parent plants were generously shared with breeders and seed banks in Amsterdam, sometimes without asking for anything in return.

Companies like Serious Seeds, Super Sativa Seed Club, Sensi Seeds, Dutch Passion and Green House Seed Company drew on some of that genetic material to develop several of their most successful varieties throughout the 80s and 90s. Simon, founder of Serious Seeds, created AK-47 in 1992 using Afghan, Mexican, Thai and Colombian genetics, for example. His legacy lives on in fast, potent varieties like our AK420 Feminised.

On the other side of the Atlantic, new classics kept emerging too. One of the most widely accepted accounts of OG Kush's origin points to Florida grower Matt Berger, known as Bubba, as a key figure in this genetic's birth. Later, Josh D helped preserve, select and popularise her in California. As with many varieties born in the underground scene, different accounts exist, but both names are essential to understanding the story of OG Kush.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, Spanish breeders picked up the baton. They began selecting and refining many of the genetics previously developed by Dutch seed banks, adapting them to Spain's climate, growing methods and growers' preferences.

One of the most important examples was Critical Mass, originally created by Shantibaba from Afghan genetics and Skunk #1. This variety found a second home in the Basque Country, where different breeders selected especially fast, productive and aromatic specimens.

Out of this work came selections like Critical Bilbo, later developed by Genehtik Seeds as Kritikal Bilbo, and Critical+, presented by Dinafem. Each version brought its own take, but together they helped turn Critical into one of the most widely grown genetic families in Spain.

At Seedstockers Barcelona we've carried that work forward by selecting some of the best Critical genetics available in Spain. We crossed elite clones of Kritikal Bilbo and Critical+ with original regular Critical Mass seeds preserved in our genetic archive. The result was our BCN Critical XXL Feminised, created to hold onto the power and recognisable character of the best Criticals, while delivering greater stability and a far higher production potential.

This is the real story behind the classic varieties: a chain of growers and breeders who preserved, shared and improved genetics across several generations. Their work lives on in our Cannabis Seeds, both in the Feminised Seeds that keep the character of the original plants and in the Autoflowering Seeds that adapt those classics to faster, simpler growing cycles.

Another breeder who changed the landscape of Cannabis Seeds forever was Canadian Sasha Przytyk, better known as The Joint Doctor. His contribution was especially important for the development of modern autoflowering varieties. Sasha was after compact, fast plants capable of finishing properly through Canada's short summers. During his experiments he began working with a genetic called Mexican Rudy, which he'd received from his friend Antonio and which stood out for its small size and extremely early flowering.

Sasha crossed Mexican Rudy first with Northern Lights #2 and later brought in William's Wonder. In the following generations, plants began appearing that started flowering automatically even under 24 hours of daily light. Rather than dismissing them as oddities, Sasha recognised the potential of that trait and kept selecting for it until he'd stabilised it. The resulting line, initially called Willy's Automatic, would go on to become Lowryder.

Lowryder opened up a whole new chapter in cannabis breeding. Those first plants were small compared to today's Autoflowering Seeds, but they proved it was possible to combine psychoactive cannabis with flowering that's independent of the photoperiod. The subsequent work of Sasha and many other breeders steadily pushed up the potency, yield, size and quality of these genetics. Today, Lowryder's influence can be found, directly or indirectly, throughout a huge part of the modern autoflowering gene pool.

The history of cannabis genetics is a long one and, in many cases, was built far from the spotlight and with barely any documentation. We've tried to present this information as fully and rigorously as possible, but we know there are still many stories, testimonies and details out there waiting to be uncovered. If you have additional information, documents or experiences that could help us complete or correct this history, you can share them with us through our contact form. We'd love to keep learning and give credit to those who helped preserve and develop these classic genetics.

Buying guide: which classic seeds to choose for your grow

If you're after classic seeds for your next grow, this guide will help you find the variety that best suits your experience, your space and what you're looking for in your harvest.

Best classic seeds for beginners

If it's your first time growing, look for resilient, easy-to-manage varieties. Northern Lights Feminised and White Widow Feminised are two of the most forgiving classics: they grow compact, shrug off watering or nutrient mistakes, and deliver solid results even without much experience. Super Skunk Feminised and AK420 Feminised are also great options thanks to their speed and low-maintenance character.

Classic varieties with the biggest yields

For those who prioritise quantity, BCN Power Plant Feminised, Big Bud Feminised and Moby Dick Feminised stand out for their abundant harvests. BCN Critical XXL Feminised, our own take on Critical, is also known for her generous production without sacrificing quality.

Fastest classic feminised seeds

If time is tight, AK420 Feminised and Super Skunk Feminised are among the quickest-flowering classics, ready in just over two months. BCN Critical XXL Fast Version shortens the cycle even further, ideal for those who want to harvest as soon as possible

Most potent classics

For those after intense effects, OG Kush Feminised, GG4 Feminised and Girl Scout Cookies Feminised are among the most potent classics in the catalogue, with high THC levels and long-lasting effects recommended only for experienced consumers.

Best classic autoflowering seeds

The feminised versions of these classic genetics can perform beautifully in warm, dry climates with long summers. In colder, damper regions, or where the growing season is short, though, their Autoflowering versions tend to be the safer bet thanks to their fast cycle and early harvest. Northern Lights Autoflowering, White Widow Autoflowering and Amnesia Haze Autoflowering keep much of the character of their original versions while cutting down the risk of rain, cold and humidity late in the season.

Best classic seeds for indoor growing

Low, compact varieties are the ones best suited to tight spaces. White Widow Feminised, Super Skunk Feminised and Northern Lights Feminised, with their indica structure, are easy to keep under control in a grow cabinet or tent.

Best classic seeds for outdoor growing

Outdoors, with more space and natural light, varieties like Amnesia Haze Feminised, Jack Herer Feminised and Sour Diesel Feminised can reach their full potential and achieve sizes and yields far beyond what indoor growing allows.

Frequently asked questions about classic seeds

What makes a seed a classic?
A variety is considered a classic when it has marked a turning point in cannabis genetics and remains relevant decades after its creation, whether for its flavour, its yield or its effect.
Are classic seeds hard to grow?
It depends on the variety. Northern Lights and White Widow are very forgiving and beginner-friendly, while Amnesia Haze or Jack Herer call for a bit more experience and growing time. The Autoflowering versions of our classic varieties are easy to grow and a good option for beginners, since they have shorter cycles and don't rely on a change in light hours to start flowering. You'll find the recommended difficulty level on each product page.
Can I grow classic seeds outdoors?
Yes, most classic varieties can be grown outdoors with excellent results, especially in warm climates with long summers. In areas with short seasons, low temperatures or high humidity, it's best to choose fast-flowering varieties or their Autoflowering Seeds versions, which finish sooner and reduce the risk of cold, rain and mould late in the grow.
What's the difference between classic seeds and modern varieties?
Classics are genetics with a long track record and a well-established reputation, while modern varieties tend to be more recent crosses focused on trending flavours or effects. In fact, many modern varieties have a classic somewhere in their genetic tree.
