Indica or indica-dominant genetics are a group of strains that share the same morphological characteristics and flowering time, and whose effects are focused on the body on a more physical level.

What are Indica cannabis strains?

'Indica' is a term often used to describe cannabis strains and products with strong physical, sedative, and relaxing effects. However, these terms are far more useful for growers than for users, as they're commonly used to describe the morphology or physical characteristics of the cannabis plant and its growth cycle, rather than its specific effects.

What is the origin of Indica cannabis seeds?

When the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus first published the scientific name Cannabis sativa in 1753, the only type of cannabis he had seen was the shorter, more robust plant we now know as hemp. After his death in 1785, the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck described and named a second species, Cannabis indica, meaning "Cannabis from India", as this was the origin of the first samples that reached Europe. Lamarck based his classification mainly on morphological differences, and he also noted that Cannabis indica was a more potent intoxicant.

Thus, indica and sativa were initially used to distinguish strains according to their place of origin. The shift to today's popular definition came in 1974, when biologist Richard Evans Schultes applied the term to marijuana plants in Afghanistan, which displayed a shorter stem and wider leaves. Today we reserve the Indica label for short, wide, bushy plants of Afghan heritage, although modern research suggests that there is in fact only one cannabis species, Cannabis sativa L., with indica simply being a subspecies.

Where do Indica strains derive from?

Native Indica landraces originated near Central Asia and spread to regions of India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Morocco, and Turkey. These are locally adapted strains, optimised through natural evolution to grow in their specific microclimates, generally between 30° and 50° of latitude.

What are Indica-dominant hybrids?

Crossbreeding has dominated the last 50 years of cannabis growing, virtually eliminating the possibility of finding pure indica or sativa strains. The way plants are classified nowadays generally means that a plant is predominantly one or the other. All modern strains are technically hybrid strains.

What is the difference between Indica and Sativa seeds?

Most genetics today are hybrids, but Indica and Sativa still mark two very different ways of growing and getting high. Whether you choose a feminised or autoflowering version, these are the main differences between both types of cannabis seeds.

Appearance and dimensions of Indica plants

Indicas tend to grow into short plants with thick stems, normally under two metres tall. They also tend to produce more lateral branches and denser growth than Sativa varieties, resulting in wider, bushier plants.

The flowers form highly populated clusters around the internodes of the female plant. The foliage is usually dark green, with leaves made up of short, wide leaf blades. The branches grow upwards and strengthen to support the weight of the buds at the tips, which makes them perfectly suited to indoor growing.

Growth and flowering patterns of Indica cannabis plants

Strains with predominantly Indica genetics tend to develop faster than their Sativa relatives in both the vegetative and flowering stages. This trend goes back to their native habitats in the high plains of Central Asia, where harsh winters give way to short summers that favour shorter growth and flowering cycles, so the plants can be harvested before the arrival of autumn cold and humidity. As a result, Indica strains have flowering times of 50 to 70 days. Their buds tend to be denser and more compact than those of Sativas, as the species is an expert in retaining water for its natural survival.

Yield and cannabinoids of Indica varieties

Indica varieties have always been known for their outstanding resin-yielding capacity, perhaps as an adaptation to protect themselves from the harsh climatic conditions of the mountain regions where they originate. This high resin content was ideal for making hash, the dominant way of consuming Indica strains at their origin, which remains popular across much of the eastern hemisphere.

Scientific literature shows that Indica plants tend to have a higher CBD content than Sativas, which tend to have higher THC levels. Because they produce higher amounts of CBD, indicas deliver a much more complete and less psychoactive effect. However, many researchers believe that other factors, such as the CBD to THC ratio, are more important in determining potential effects.

What effects do Indica cannabis strains produce?

Within the cannabis community, Indica plants are often characterised by their sedative effects, which usually lead to an intense bodily sensation, while Sativa strains are considered more stimulating and produce more of a mental high.

However, the effects of marijuana are based on each strain's unique chemical profile, including the environment, growing conditions, terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids, rather than on a specific genetic lineage. What's more, the effects of cannabis have a lot to do with the composition of each user's individual endocannabinoid system.

Aroma, flavour, and terpene profile of Indica plants

Indica strains tend to release scents of humidity, earth, and skunk, while Sativas smell sweet, fruity, or spicy. Indica varieties are known for flavour profiles ranging from musk to earth, including black fruits such as berries and grapes. This difference is the result of terpenes, whose role in the entourage effect causes two different strains with the same proportion of cannabinoids to produce different psychoactive effects.

Terpenes characteristic of Indica varieties:

MyrceneIf the concentration is over 0.5% the plant is considered Indica. Found in mangoes, cardamom, and hops, it is a powerful sedative that could explain the more calming and sleep-inducing effects of Indica genetics.
Beta-caryophylleneA spiced terpene found in black pepper, clove, and oregano. It is one of the only known terpenes that can interact directly with the CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system, which makes it effective as an anti-inflammatory and mood booster.
LinaloolAlso found in mint, known for its sedative and stress-reducing properties. Strains like OG Kush Feminized or Northern Lights Feminized contain large amounts of linalool, giving them relaxing and euphoric experiences.
Limonene. Some favourite Indica varieties contain large amounts of this mood-lifting terpene. Found in White Widow Feminized, Gelato 41 Feminized, or Sherbet Feminized.
Humulene. With a clearly hoppy herbal aroma, it is found in smaller but significant amounts in strains like Panty Punch© Feminized or Cookies Fast Feminized.

Growing Indica marijuana varieties indoors and outdoors

The quick growth time, limited stretching, and stocky build of the Indica plant make it especially suited to indoor growing, as its short height lets you fit several plants into a reduced space. Once you shift to the flowering period, they become two to three times bigger, and most varieties finish flowering after about 2 months. Outdoors they are also quite quick to flower, generally finishing in mid- or late September, perfect for regions where the end-of-summer rains arrive early.

Are Indica varieties suitable for beginners?

Indica strains evolved to withstand the negative influence of unpredictable weather, which means that seeds with a high percentage of Indica genetics tend to be easier to handle, even for less experienced growers. Feeding is relatively simple, and they are hardy plants that can tolerate high doses of nutrients. The one thing to watch out for is that Indica buds tend to be more compact than Sativa flowers, which makes them more prone to mould issues from moisture trapped within the bud structure. In general, choosing an easy, sweet indica like Mandarin Panties Feminized is the safest route to a successful grow.

Frequently asked questions about Indica seeds

What is the difference between an Indica and a Sativa seed?
Indicas are shorter, more compact plants with faster flowering (50-70 days) and denser buds. Sativas grow taller and take longer to flower. In terms of effects, indicas tend to produce a more relaxing, bodily effect, while sativas are more cerebral and energising, although this depends mainly on the terpene and cannabinoid profile of each particular strain.
Are Indica seeds suitable for indoor growing?
They are especially suited to indoor growing thanks to their quick growth time, limited stretching, and stocky build. Their short height lets you fit several plants into a reduced space, and most varieties finish flowering around two months after switching to the flowering period.
Are Indica seeds difficult to grow?
Generally, they are easier to grow than Sativas, as they are hardy plants with good nutrient tolerance and more predictable cycles. The main thing to watch is humidity, to prevent mould in their dense buds.
