Even though autoflowering cannabis seeds have earned plenty of attention in recent years, some growers still hold back, haunted by the lacklustre yields of the first generation that hit the market at the turn of this century. The truth is this genetic line has travelled a long road since then, and today she hands growers a real, top shelf option worth building a garden around.

What are autoflower cannabis seeds?

Autoflowering cannabis, also known as automatic or autoflower genetics, describes plants whose flowering kicks in automatically according to age, rather than in response to a shift in photoperiod. This sets them apart from photoperiod varieties, which need to be switched to a 12/12 cycle (12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness) before they will start throwing flowers. In nature, photoperiod cannabis begins flowering after the summer solstice, once the days start shortening. Autos skip that trigger entirely: they flower no matter what the light is doing, which makes them just as useful indoors as outdoors, since you get to harvest well ahead of your photoperiod sisters and dodge the mould problems that show up with the first autumn rains.

How Long Do Autoflowering Strains Take to Grow?

Autoflowering seeds live a noticeably shorter life than their photoperiod counterparts. Photoperiod cannabis can take 4 to 6 months to reach full maturity, while autos are usually ready to harvest between 8 and 10 weeks after germination. Outdoors, that compressed life cycle means you can run several crops in a single season instead of just one, a real advantage if you are gardening through short or chilly summers.

Where Does Autoflowering Genetics Come From?

The secret sits with Cannabis ruderalis, a subspecies native to Russia and Siberia that developed unique adaptations to brutal environments: intense cold, wildly variable day lengths, and next to no resources. Unlike the psychoactive varieties, ruderalis produces very few cannabinoids on her own, which is why breeders cross her into Cannabis sativa and indica lines to build autoflowering versions of the most beloved strains around. The earliest ruderalis experiments date back to the 1970s, the first commercial autoflowering seeds landed in the 2000s, and the genetics have been polished ever since, reaching a level of quality today that goes toe to toe with feminised or regular seeds.

What Is the Difference Between Autoflowering and Feminised Seeds?

Photoperiod feminised seeds rely on the ratio of light to darkness to flower. Indoors, you are in the driver's seat: 18/6h for vegetative growth, then 12/12h to kick off flowering. Autoflowering seeds flower on their own in 60 to 80 days, no photoperiod switch required.

Seed TypeFloweringBest ForMain Advantage
Autoflowering Seeds8-10 weeks from germinationBeginners, fast grows, multiple cyclesShort cycle, independent of light
Feminised Seeds8-12 weeks in floweringGrowers seeking control and maximum productionFull control over size, shape, and yield
Regular SeedsVariableBreeders and genetic selectionUseful for crosses and preservation

Neither one beats the other outright, it all comes down to what you need. Feminised seeds hand you total control over the cycle, which translates into bigger plants and heavier harvests. Autoflowering seeds hand you speed, discretion, and versatility.

The Advantages of Autoflowering Seeds

Compact, discreet sizeSmaller, easier to manage plants: ideal for tight balconies, backyard corners, or guerrilla grows. Do not let the small stature fool you, though, these ladies still throw thick colas and side branches loaded with bud.
Tough and beginner friendly.Autos inherit ruderalis's grit: they shrug off cold snaps, run a lower risk of pests and fungus thanks to their short cycle, and forgive rookie mistakes far more readily than most strains.
Built for urban growing.Since they do not depend on a dark cycle, streetlights and city light pollution simply do not faze them.
Lightning fast cycle.Lightning fast cycle. Ready in 8 to 10 weeks from germination, autos let you squeeze several harvests out of a single outdoor season and grant total independence from the photoperiod indoors.

How to Grow Autoflowering Varieties

An autoflowering plant's cycle runs so tight that success really comes down to planning ahead and steering clear of any needless stress. Unlike photoperiod strains, which have time to bounce back from a mistake, any hiccup with an auto can dent your final yield. From the day you drop that seed into the medium, the clock is already ticking.

Growing Autoflowering Seeds Outdoors

Autos thrive especially well in warm regions with mild winters, where you can pull off up to three harvests a year.

In a Mediterranean climate. Sow your first crop between mid April and early May, once the frost risk has passed. You will be harvesting by late July and can sow again in August for an October harvest.

In an Atlantic or continental climate. With more rain, less sun, and shorter summers, one harvest per year is the norm. Aim to sow in early June for a late August harvest.

Growing Autoflowering Seeds Indoors

Autoflowering seeds bloom automatically under any light cycle, so there is no need to flip the photoperiod indoors to trigger flowering. The more hours of light you give them, the more efficiently they perform, always keeping it above 12 hours a day. You can run a stable 18/6, 20/4, or even 22/2 cycle for their entire life. Some growers push straight through with 24 hours of continuous light, though it is not generally recommended since these plants do appreciate a short rest period.

What Is the Best Growing Method for Autoflowering Plants?

Time is everything with autos: avoid stressing your plants or you will lose precious momentum. As a rule, skip heavy pruning and training. If you do need to train them, stick to gentle, low stress methods like LST (Low Stress Training), and only on varieties known for vigorous, sprawling growth.

If you are looking for an auto to experiment with training on, our Jack Herer Auto is a fantastic pick: a big girl with vigorous growth both upward and outward, and a heavily branched structure that makes her the ideal candidate for optimised cultivation techniques.

SCROG is not recommended for autoflowering plants. SOG (Sea of Green), however, can work beautifully: run plants through a very brief vegetative stage, often just two weeks, favouring single central colas that make the most of every inch of space you have got.

Seedstockers' Best Autoflowering Genetics

Picking the right seed is one of the most important calls you will make before starting a grow. In our seed bank, every autoflowering variety comes in feminised form, so you never have to sex your plants or worry about males crashing the party. And that is just the opening act.

Seedstockers' Classic Autoflowering Varieties

Our catalogue rounds up the world's most iconic, best loved genetics in autoflowering form: cannabis royalty that earned legendary status through flavour, potency, and results that hold up harvest after harvest. Take Super Skunk Autoflower, beloved for her stunning body effect paired with an uplifting mental buzz. Or Sour Diesel Autoflower, another legend that has won over millions of fans with her flavour and knockout potency, embodying everything a great Californian smoke should be. Just as reliable are our White Widow Autoflower and Moby Dick Autoflower, genetics that have earned their spot among cannabis royalty and never miss, crop after crop.

Seedstockers Superior Autoflowering Varieties

We could not be prouder to present our Seedstockers Superior line in autoflowering form, a selection developed by our breeding team in collaboration with Californian breeders, home to some of the finest quality strains on today's cannabis scene. After pooling genetic material and know how in selecting and stabilising crosses, we have developed five hybrids that represent the very best of an elite breeder collaboration: Panty Punch© Autoflower, Blue Moby© Autoflower, Mach & Crack© Autoflower, Thunder Banana© Autoflower, and Apollo Black Cherry© Autoflower. With striking terpene and cannabinoid profiles, incredible flavour, and standout yields, these genetics bring something genuinely new to the cannabis community.

Growing Autoflowering Seeds Indoors

Indoors, autos flower regardless of the light cycle, giving you total freedom to run the same schedule from seed to harvest. The more hours of light you provide, within reason, the better your yield. An 18/6h cycle is the most common choice and strikes the best balance between production and energy costs.

Keep in mind that autoflowering plants do not handle transplanting well. Plant them straight into their final pot from day one, with a minimum of 7 litres, or 15 litres if you are aiming for bigger girls.

Frequently Asked Questions About Autoflowering Seeds

Are Autoflowering Seeds Suitable for Beginners?
Absolutely, they are one of the best ways to start. Their toughness, short cycle, and tolerance for rookie mistakes make them especially beginner friendly. Super Skunk Autoflower and Jack Herer Autoflower are particularly easy to manage.
How Many Harvests Can I Get a Year with Autoflowering Seeds?
In Mediterranean climates, up to three harvests a year outdoors. Indoors, continuous production is entirely possible thanks to their independence from the photoperiod.
Can I Grow Autoflowering Seeds Outdoors in Cold Climates?
Yes. Thanks to their ruderalis heritage, autos tolerate lower temperatures better than photoperiod strains, and their short cycle lets them dodge the fungus and rain that come with autumn. In Atlantic or continental climates, sow in June and harvest in August.
Do Autoflowering Seeds Yield Less Than Feminised Seeds?
The earliest generations did fall short on yield, but today's genetics have closed that gap dramatically. The varieties in our Superior line, in autoflowering form, deliver highly competitive yields, with the added bonus of that lightning fast cycle.
Where Can I Buy Quality Autoflowering Seeds?
At Seedstockers you'll find a wide selection of autoflowering seeds backed by a germination guarantee and discreet shipping across Europe and beyond. Genetics selected by our breeders from Barcelona.
