There are a few reasons why cannabis growers choose feminised cannabis seeds. After reading this article, you will see why you should buy feminised cannabis seeds when you grow cannabis. To start off, we should explain exactly what a feminised cannabis seed is.

What are Feminised Seeds?
Like most plants, cannabis is grown from seed. In its natural environment, a flowering female cannabis plant is pollinated by a male cannabis plant. The female will then grow seeds inside of the buds. At the end of the grow season, the female plant will die, and the seeds will fall to the ground. When the grow season starts again, the seeds will grow, and the process repeats. These seeds are called regular seeds. They will have 2 parents, one male, and one female. Which gives them a chance of being 50% male, or 50% female. Feminised seeds are different. They have 2 parents, but both are female. This is done by making a female cannabis plant grow “male'' reproductive organs. Though the plant produces pollen, and has male flowers, it is still genetically female. This pollen is then used to pollinate a female cannabis plant. That plant will produce seeds, and both of its parents are female. This gives the seed a 99.9% chance of being female. There are other ways to make feminised cannabis seeds, but this is the most reliable.
Why are Feminised Cannabis Seeds Better?
Before feminised seeds, cannabis growers would have to grow more plants than they needed. If you needed 4 plants, you would have to grow 8. This was to give you a good chance of having 4 males, and 4 females. The male plants would be cut down and discarded, and the females would be grown for the buds. If the males are left around the female plants, they will be pollinated, and the buds would be filled with seeds. And nobody wants to smoke seedy buds. By using feminised cannabis seeds, you not only reduce the amount of plants you have to grow, but you also reduce the chances of your buds getting pollinated. Instead of growing 8 plants, and throwing 4 away, you plant four seeds, knowing they will all be female.
Are Fem Seeds Always Female?
Genetics is a major factor when it comes to how reliable cannabis seeds are. On some occasions, the genetics of a certain strain may not be stabilised. This might cause a female plant to “hermie”. A hermaphrodite cannabis plant is a plant that will grow female and male parts on the same plant. Now, this is not the same as the process explained above. Hermaphroditism is not a favourable trait in any strain. Sometimes it can go unnoticed and you will have seedy buds. To ensure you get a 99.9% chance of getting a female cannabis plant, from a feminised cannabis seed, you must buy feminised seeds from a reliable supplier. If you buy cannabis seeds from the right places, they will always be female.
What are Autoflowering Seeds?
Auto feminised seeds are both feminised, and automatic. We have explained what feminised is, but you might be confused by what we mean as “automatic”. You see, a cannabis plant can be “photoperiod”, or “automatic”. A photoperiod cannabis plant is a plant that will not flower until it receives 12 hours of light, and 12 hours of darkness per day. The plants are “vegged” under 18 hours of light, and 6 hours of darkness per day, until they are big enough to be flowered. Automatic cannabis seeds will flower under any light cycle, you do not have to change it to 12/12. Auto feminised seeds will flower under 18/6 and some will even flower under 24 hours of light per day. They grow quickly, and they grow big, autoflowering cannabis seeds are a great way to grow cannabis. Learn more about them in this post on our blog: What are Autoflower Cannabis Seeds
Can Feminised Cannabis Seeds Turn Male?
If feminised seeds come from a good seedbank, you can be sure they will be female. It is very unlikely that they will turn male if the growing conditions are correct. In some circumstances, a cannabis plant can hermaphrodite, but this is usually because of a mix of a few things: Bad Genetics Hostile Environments Light Leaks As mentioned, bad genetics is a major factor. If the genetics of the seed are flawed, then there is very little you can do. Again, make sure you buy feminised cannabis seeds from a good seedbank! Good genetics is half the battle. If a flowering female cannabis plant is living in a hostile environment, it may hermie, and produce seeds as a way of preserving its genetics for the next season. This may be because it is too hot, or too cold. It may even be down to not getting enough water. But again, with strong genetics this becomes less of a risk. You must ensure any dark period for your plants is fully dark! You must not let it be any brighter than the full moon during night hours in the grow room. But full darkness is much safer. Light leaks are the number one cause of hermies. An irregular light cycle will hermie your plants, make sure there are no light leaks.
