What are Autoflower Cannabis Seeds?

Cannabis plants go through many stages during their life cycle. The two main stages of growth being: vegetation stage and flowering stage. Vegetation is when a cannabis plant grows stems, branches, leaves and roots. The flowering stage is when a cannabis plant grows “flowers”. These flowers will differ depending on the sex of the plant. Before autoflowering seeds were available, cannabis growers would use photoperiod cannabis seeds. Photoperiod means the plants are responsive to the amount of light they get every day. Photoperiod cannabis plants need 18 hours of light a day to stay in the vegetative stage. To make the plant flower, you need to change the light cycle, so the plant is getting 12 hours of light, and 12 hours of darkness every day. This is where autoflower seeds are different. As suggested by the name, they flower automatically. There is no need to change the light cycle to 12/12, as autoflowering cannabis plants will flower under any light cycle, even lights on for 24 hours a day!

Where do Autoflowers Come From?

There are a few different types of cannabis plants. You may have heard of a couple of them already; Indica, and Sativa. Well, there is a third type of cannabis plant that is not as well known, called the “ruderalis”. The ruderalis is a type of cannabis plant that grows naturally in cold harsh climates, like Russia, and Central Asia. It is very short, and does not produce a lot of cannabinoids. But, it has one very important trait that caught the interest of cannabis breeders. It flowers automatically. By breeding the ruderalis with Indica and Sativa cannabis strains, it was possible to create strains that carried traits of Indica and Sativa cannabis plants, (like big flowers, and high potency), but also carried the autoflowering trait from the ruderalis At first, autoflower seeds were low quality, and did not produce great plants. But after nearly 2 decades of cross breeding, the genetics are stable. Autos are now becoming cannabis growers favorite seeds to grow!

Are Autoflower Cannabis Seeds Female?

In most cases, autoflowering cannabis seeds will come as feminised seeds. This means there is a 99% chance they will be female. The female flowers on a cannabis plant is what most growers are looking for. Male cannabis plants are mostly used by cannabis breeders. Because of this, most growers will use automatic feminised seeds. But you can also get “regular” autoflower seeds, that will have a 50% chance of being male, or female.

Are Autoflower Seeds Easy to Grow?

Yes! Anyone can grow cannabis. It is much easier than you think. Especially when you grow autoflowers. Once you have all of the equipment you need to grow cannabis, all you need to do is plant the seed. With some experience, you could yield between 4 to 5 ounces of dry bud per auto! On average, an autoflowering cannabis plant will be ready for harvest just 12 weeks after germinating the seed!

How to Germinate Autoflower Seeds

Germinating autoflowering cannabis seeds, is just the same as any other seed. Like most things in growing cannabis, there are many ways to do this. Some growers will prefer to use “the paper towel method”. The paper towel method is when you place the autoflowering cannabis seed between 2 damp paper towels. The seed is left between these paper towels for around 24 hours. The towels are kept moist constantly. After 24-48 hours, you should see a “Tap Root” pushing its way out of the seed. This is when you plant the seed into your soil/medium. Some growers skip the paper towel method, and just soak the seed in water for a few hours and then plant it. Any of these techniques will work fine. Once planted, you should see the shoot of the plant coming out of the medium within a few days.

Can Autoflower Seeds Grow Outside?

Because autoflowering cannabis plants have been bred with the ruderalis, it can be very hardy, and can grow outdoors easily. Many growers have moved to autoflowering plants for their outdoors grows, simply because they grow so much quicker. A big problem when growing cannabis outdoors, is the cold weather can set in before the plant is ready for harvest. This can cause mould and bud rot to form on the plants. Because autoflowering cannabis plants will take on average 12 weeks to go from germination to harvest, you can plant them, and estimate when harvest will be. If you plant your seeds at the right time, your plants will be harvested before the cold weather sets in. You may even be able to get 2 outdoor crops in one growing season!

When to Plant Autoflower Seeds Outdoors

It is always best to start any cannabis plant indoors. Let it grow a little, and establish a decent root base, and then plant it outdoors. This should be done in early spring time, when there is very little chance of any frost forming. You can plant autoflower seeds outdoors throughout spring and summer! The important thing to remember is they will take around 12 weeks before they are ready for harvest. So make sure you don't plant them outdoors too late into the growing season.

Do Autoflower Seeds Need 12/12?

Though autoflowering cannabis plants can grow under 12/12 (12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness), it is better to give them more light. Plants use light to make food, using a process called photosynthesis. The more light a plant can get, the more food it can make. So though an autoflowering cannabis plant will be fine under 12 hour of light per day, it will do better with 18 hours of light per day. Some growers will grow autos under 24 hours of light and not give the plant any darkness at all. The consensus of growers seems to say that 20 hours light, and 4 hours darkness, is the maximum. This gives the plant plenty of light, but also a few hours to rest.

How long does an Autoflower Take to Grow?

Depending on what strain you're growing, an auto flowering cannabis plant will take between 10 weeks, and 16 weeks to grow to full maturity. There will be around 4-5 weeks of the vegative stage, where the plant grows more roots and leaves, preparing itself for flowers. When the plant reaches a certain size, it will begin to flower. From here the flowering period can be from 6 to 10 weeks, some strains may even have 12 weeks of flowering.

Are Autoflower Cannabis Seeds Less Potent?

Autos are still a reasonably new “technology” for cannabis growers. They have only been around for 15-20 years. In the early days of autos, they were small, and low on potency. This gave a lot of growers a bad experience, and some of them were put off using autos. Over the years, autos have massively improved. Not only can they beat a photoperiod cannabis plant in yield, and quality, but they can also do it faster! It has been said that autoflowering cannabis plants are so easy to grow, that one day they will be in everyone's back garden! With a huge selection of strains available, there is sure to be some autoflower cannabis seeds that you will enjoy growing. Why not take a look at some of the selections available at Seed Stockers?
